Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortion care up to 24 weeks.
Surgical abortion procedures are available up to 24 weeks from the start of the last menstrual period and as determined by the ultrasound.
A surgical abortion is performed with your choice of:
- local anesthesia (up to 12 weeks only)
- medication to ease anxiety
Surgical abortion procedures for early term pregnancies, up to 14 weeks, are usually done in a single visit.
For late term pregnancies, 15 to 24 weeks, surgical abortions are done in a 2 step procedure.
We will review the abortion procedure, possible risks and complications, and after-care instructions. This is an opportunity to have all of your questions answered and to discuss any concerns.
Before your Abortion
- If you desire anxiety medication, you’ll need someone who can come with you, stay in the waiting room, and then drive you home.
- Allow yourself the day of the procedure and the day after to rest. We will give you a doctor’s excuse for work if needed.
One Low Fee Includes:
- All laboratory tests

- Prescription for post-operative medication
- Birth control method started immediately, if appropriate
- Rh Globulin, if needed

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery
- Our goal is to make your visit as easy as possible.
- In a private room, a staff member will take your medical history, perform necessary lab work, and an ultrasound. She will also explain the procedure and answer any questions you might have.
- Then in a surgery room, the doctor will answer any questions and give you an examination.
- Our patients who choose to take medication to ease anxiety don’t remember the abortion experience. Once the procedure is completed (usually within 10 minutes) you will be moved to recovery where you will rest for about 30 – 60 minutes prior to going home.
- You will leave our clinic with detailed recovery instructions, all the prescriptions you need during recovery and a prescription for birth control, if appropriate.
